news from the president

about the SNAP food assistance benefits that nearly 42 million Americans receive and are due to

run out tomorrow. It came just hours after two federal judges ordered him to use money from an

emergency fund to help pay for them. And now the president seems to be saying that he will. Posting

online late today, he writes, our government lawyers do not think we have the legal authority

to pay SNAP with certain monies we have available. And now two courts have issued conflicting opinions

in what we can and cannot do. I do not want Americans to go hungry just because the radical

Democrats refuse to do the right thing and reopen the government.

Therefore, I've instructed our lawyers to ask the court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible.

Now, to be clear, these two judges, one in Massachusetts and the other in Rhode Island, were not conflicted on the central point.

Both rejected the administration's claim that it

could not use a contingency fund, which the agency says has $5.3 billion remaining in it, to help

cover the benefits. After blaming Democrats for the government shut down, the president goes on to say,

if we are given the appropriate legal direction by the court, it will be my honor
