This is Journey to the Northern Lights. It's three o'clock on a wintery afternoon in Juneau, Alaska. Middle Schooler Scotty Phillips sits in his final class of the day. His classmates

gaze at the heaps of snow falling outside the window. Only a few more minutes, and then they'll

be free to run outside for a snowball fight.

But Scotty isn't looking to play in the snow.

Wintertime in Juno means that the days are short, very short.

It's only the middle of the afternoon and the sun has already started to set.

But there's one thing that Scotty is afraid of more than anything else. The dark. He tries to focus on his

teacher instead of the dimming sky. Who can tell me what this species is called?

This one with the long legs no one it's a sandhill crane is anybody listening

no we just want to go outside and play

Scotty squirms as he watches the sun dipped down past the mountains.

He shifts his gaze to the clock at the front of the room.

It ticks and ticks and ticks.

Come on, come on.

All right.
