0:22.7

I don't remember, probably sometime going over to AK, AKA with Dave.

0:27.4

Yeah.

0:27.8

Training over there.

0:28.5

I think he came sometime right when he left house.

0:34.5

I went over to house earlier and trained in 99 and then in 2000 and I was there with Cameron and with Beaton and with Dave. Yeah. And I was only there for like a week. I just couldn't afford it. Like how it was expensive. You know, for me back then. It was a lot of money. $250 a month. Yep. Exactly. And so, so then, and I was living in San Jose, too. I'm going to driving

up to Mountain View all, just many times a day. Started training at AKA, and I was already

0:59.5

trained at AKA, but like doing more of just the kickboxing. And then now, was Bobby Southworth?

1:04.1

Bobby was the guy there. Yeah, Bobby was the guy there. And it was my first real jiu-suitous

1:08.5

instructor. I don't count that Gracie stuff I did before I went to house.

1:14.7

Yeah, I mean, like, look, Bobby was so knowledgeable and he was, you know, a little bit older.

1:20.0

I think the time I got there, he was like 35, 36. But man, he had so much knowledge.

1:24.2

And I think at the time he was just a purple belt or a brown belt. But I think he was working and teaching me the basics. Obviously a lot of the guys in those early days, we weren't into the ghee. We were all training no ghee. And I came for wrestling backgrounds. I was like, I don't want to wear that bathrobe. I'm not wearing that. But then I realized that if you want to get good at Jitsu, man, you've got to train in a ghee. You have to. Even in this day and age, people are like, oh, I don't train that way

1:46.2

with all the Nogordon Ryan stuff. I'm like, no, no, no, man. You have to train in a ghee, especially if you're just learning. So you learn the step-by-step processes of passing guard, of not just throwing the legs to the side, like learning actually how to pass, learning how to hit to these submissions the proper way,

2:00.5

control, hip pressure, all that stuff.

2:02.5

The geese slows everything down.

2:04.0

I used to hang out a lot with Carlson Gracie's senior. And a couple of things he always stuck with me. He said, if no one can hold on to you when you're wearing the ghee, how are they going to hold on to you? No ghee? Makes a lot of sense. And then he also said the problem

2:19.1

with modern jiu-jitsu was, is that people started to develop like two different games. And so one of the

2:25.3

things that he told me, he goes, he goes training the ghee, but use all your no-gi grips. Yep.
