I'm Mick Garrus, and this is Postmortem.

Let's talk a little bit about the plight of independent film.

I'm not just talking about independent filmmakers, but the production companies, the distributors,

and the exhibitors as well.

Smaller budget films have been under siege since long before the pandemic, but sheltering

in place has deepened the crisis.

The value of small-dollar films has dropped precipitously as the view at home options have

increased.

Critical films have taken a major beating in general, but those with an independent voice

without a major studio marketing budget to back them up have almost disappeared from theater

screens.

More films are being made than ever before, and there are more platforms than ever to

carry them, but indie movies have become chattel.

It takes passion and drive and commitment to make feature films of any sort.

But when you're making a film that isn't going to find the deep pockets of a universal

or Warner Bros. to spread the word, your chances of theatrical distribution have shrunk

down to primarily festival runs.

Fresh voices in film are always welcome, but hard to come by in the world of big studios,
