Quarter Lane is a small city in Northern Idaho. Its lush resorts have made it a tourist hotspot, but it is known to locals as the Lake City because of its access to more than 50 lakes.

Eight miles east of Cortal Lane is a campground called Woolf Lodge. If you drive just a bit farther down the road, you will see a small rundown house set back about 150 yards from the street.

In 2005, 37-year-old Mark Mackenzie lived there with his girlfriend, 40-year-old Brenda Groney and her three children, 13-year-old Slade, 9-year-old Dylan and Shasta who was only 8.

Because they were not worried about burglars, their back door was almost always unlocked, even at night.

It was at night on May 15, 2005, when 42-year-old Joseph Edward Duncan entered the Mackenzie Groney home through that open back door.

He was dressed in dark clothes and wearing black leather gloves. He was armed with a shotgun, duct tape, zip ties and a claw hammer.

Everyone in the house was asleep when Joseph entered, but he already knew they would be. He had been watching them for days since he had seen Dylan and Shasta playing in their swimsuits in the front yard.

There were only two homes in the secluded area where the Mackenzie Groney family lived.

During previous nights, Joseph had approached the home wearing night vision goggles. He peered through the family's windows and watched them.

He studied the floor plan and noted where everyone slept.

During the daytime, when the family was out shopping or at work in school, he had used treats to befriend the family dog, so it would not bark when he approached the house.

His plan worked, and that night, the dog did not bark.

Upon entering, Joseph found Brenda sleeping on the living room sofa. He pointed the shotgun at her and asked, where is the man? Then he zip tied and duct taped her wrists and feet.

He demanded she call her boyfriend to the living room, and then he secured Mark's wrists and ankles in the same fashion.

When Brenda called 13-year-old slayed to the living room, Joseph only zip tied the teenager's wrists behind his back.

Brenda was then forced to call out and wake up her two youngest children.

When Dylan and Shasta entered the living room, they heard Mark arguing with this strange intruder in their home, telling him the family did not have any money in the house.

Joseph Duncan had led them to believe he was in their home to rob them.

Joseph duct taped every one's mouth so they could not scream or yell.

He secured the two youngest children's wrists and carried them outside to one of Mark's trucks.
