Hi, guys, I'm your host Hector Navarro and as always I am so happy to be sitting in the recording booth at Nickelodeon animation

in Burbank, California. My guest today is an animator, painter, writer, director, character

designer, illustrator, and creator who along with his wife Sandra Akewa brought us the

Nickelodeon show L. T. Gray, the Adventures of Mani Rivera.

He also co-wrote and directed the incredibly unique animated feature film The Book of Life.

Tell us what your childhood was like.

Well, I'm originally from Mexico City. Like all kids, I was obsessed with cartoons and movies and when when I was

nine years old my father said Mexico City is too dangerous yeah it's too

much crime it's too insane. Everybody we knew

started getting robbed. So it was like getting closer and closer and he said, I need to take the

family somewhere safe, where my children can play outside outside and there will be no crime and
