15 years ago, a picture throwing 100 miles an hour was a spectacle.

It meant you were watching something rare, something unnatural, the kind of arm that showed up

once every few years and changed the way

people talked about the game. Now, it barely registers. Today, it seems like almost every

pitcher throws 100 miles an hour. The best pitcher in baseball, the top prospect, the closer, the guy who's

coming in during a blowout, a random guy in the minor leagues, and nobody is reacting anymore.

Somewhere along the way, something enormous changed about baseball.

Because this didn't just happen. Velocci didn't just creep up over time.

The sport figured something out.

To understand what was going on, I talked to Adam Ottavino, who I once tried to hit off of,

pitched in professional baseball for 20 years, and is now a baseball broadcaster. It's unfortunate because, look, as much as I want to poo-poo it, like, it's easier to pitch when you throw hard. You know, in the brief moments where I threw in the upper 90s, I was unhittable. I was unhittable. Like, I was good at the other stuff, but when you, when you, the velocity was that force multiplier, right?

And as much as I don't want it to be true, it is true.

It's just unfortunate because it's really hard to do both, throw hard and stay helpful.
