| 1:17.0 | Hello and welcome back to Cult Leader. I'm your Cult Leader Spencer Henry, and in this week's episode, I'm breaking down the story of one of the most moiterous, horrible, nurses in history because, you know what, we're having a medical moment over here right now. |
| 1:44.0 | A medical month, you might say. Today we're talking about a woman who was dubbed Jolly Jane, and let me tell you, she was anything but, and I had to double. |
| 1:54.0 | Triple, quadruple check to see if we have ever talked about her on this show before, and I was actually really surprised to realize that we hadn't, because this story is so reminiscent of some of the earlier episodes we told on the show. |
| 2:06.0 | And if you thought Beth Wettlopper was something, hold on to your fucking, what, what a nurses wear scrubs. Hold on to your scrubs, because you are in for it. |
| 2:16.0 | This story in particular starts way back in 1857, when Jane, real name Honore Kelly, was born to Bridget and Peter Kelly, two Irish immigrants who had settled in the Massachusetts area. |
| 2:29.0 | Though not much is known about her early years, all signs point to a troubled childhood. Her mom died at a really young age due to complications from tuberculosis. |
| 2:40.0 | And her father, Peter, was better known in their community as Kelly The Crack. I'm unsure of the exact year her mother passed away, most of my sources, including Michael Potts, who's a professor of philosophy at Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. |
| 2:54.0 | He did a write-up on Jane Topin, where he mentioned that the mom passed away when she was less than a year old. |
| 3:00.0 | I also learned from his reporting that when Jane, or Honore, was just six years old, she, along with older sister Delia Josephine, who was eight at the time, were dropped off by their father at the Boston female asylum. |
| 3:14.0 | Now, this wasn't like an insane asylum of the times, this operated more as an orphanage, I guess, and the dad took them there because he felt like he wasn't able to take care of them on his own. |
| 3:26.0 | I was actually able to track down the records, like official records, from the asylum that were on the UMass archives, and it turns out that 99% of the articles in reporting that's been done on Jane Topin have some of the most basic information listed inaccurately. |
| 3:43.0 | Jane was born in 1857, though if you google her most likely, you'll see the date 1854, but 1857, according to these official hospital records, and Delia was born in 1855. |
| 3:58.0 | Both sisters were admitted to the Boston female asylum in February of 1863. |
