There is a, I suppose you'd call it a ritual that goes along with becoming a nurse.

Back in 1968, when I was in a private nursing school, there came a time when we had to take

the Florence Nightingale Pledge.

It's a ceremony.

All of the nurses wore their whites.

And in it, each student nurse would walk up to kind of like an alter thing.

And in our hands, we would have what looked to be like a brass candle holder, kind of like

a small plate.

And it held a candle that was lit.

And the student nurse, one by one, would walk up to the professor and our nursing cap.

This is in the days when nurses wore white caps.

Would be put on her head.

And it was such a proud day for me and my parents were there.

It was a big, big deal.

And I'll never forget it, taking the Florence Nightingale Pledge.

And the Pledge goes something like this.

I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to pass my life

in purity and to practice my profession faithfully.
