Yesterday we had what was kind of maybe going to be I don't know if it's the first

showdown the first feet of strength for Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the house, but it went in a kind of a

funny sideways way. The headline, as you've probably already seen by the time you listen to this

podcast, was that House Republicans and really the House Freedom Caucus let Mike

Johnson do what Kevin McCarthy had done and it had got him fired as House Speaker,

which is to say he couldn't get something worked out with, he couldn't get something passed by his own Republican

caucus. So he decided to just say, hey Democrats, can we just get together and pass a kind of a, it's not a clean CR but it's a you know lightly soiled CR I don't know what you want to put it it

didn't have the poison pills that get you a government shutdown obviously

Democrats and a lot of Republicans wanted

Ukraine aid, put in there, Israel aid, all this kind of stuff. Republicans ended up

with just we're just going to kind of keep the lights on for you know a little while

longer see what we can get worked out we're not going to give you that that aid but I think

everybody on capital hill even though that was not ideal, no one wants to have

a big crisis shut down, so we're just going to kick the can down the road. But while that was happening, and it's still not quite clear to me
