Hey, everybody, it's Matt. This is the 10-minute Bible Hour podcast. Yesterday we were talking about that

0:21.5

little speech I got as a first-time author. We're helpful people. We're like, this is the kind of

0:27.3

stuff you're going to see now. So get ready for that. And then we likewise to that to something much,

0:33.9

much, much, much, much, much more significant, which is the scene we get here in

0:38.4

John 1, where we're wrapping up this initial week of Jesus being out and about and doing stuff,

0:45.7

and Jesus is assembling the beginnings of his party, who he's going to roll through this story with,

0:52.1

and at the end of chapter 1, he offers this cryptic,

0:56.8

but very exciting promise about all the stuff that the disciples are going to see. And I think,

1:05.0

if we look a little bit closer at the language behind the text, we're going to see that that promise to the disciples,

1:14.3

that you're going to see some amazing stuff, is also a promise to the reader, to you and me.

1:21.1

Maybe I'm stretching it, but I don't think so. Let's take a look at it. All right,

1:24.7

it's a situation we got here. Toward the end of John chapter one, we meet Philip and Nathaniel.

1:30.2

Now, we don't call Nathaniel Bartholomew here in John,

1:34.1

but usually because of the way the list of disciples plays out.

1:38.7

Historically, Christians have associated Nathaniel and Bartholomew together.

1:43.4

A lot of people had more than one name in Bible

1:47.1

times. I mean, just the two sentences before we meet, Nathaniel, we got a guy who has two names,

1:53.9

Simon, Peter, but also really Seifus, so kind of three names. So not that weird. Probably the

1:59.3

guy we're looking at here is Nathaniel slash

2:01.4

Bartholomew when you see him around the other Gospels. And as we've discussed, Nathaniel has

2:08.6

got a bit of a snarky streak to him. He's not from Beth Seda up near Copernium on the Sea of

2:15.0

Galilee, where Philip and Andrew and Peter are from.
