France's Belle-Epoch, and England's late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

As you enter the paintings gallery in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art,

it's likely she will be one of the first to greet you.

Gazing down from a height of over seven feet, the striking portrait of Edith Minter and Stokes

will stop you in your tracks.

When you take a look at this extraordinary portrait painted in 1897 as a wedding present,

it's Edith, the subject, who is very much in control.

Her husband, Isaac Newton-Felps Stokes, is there, but much in the background,

even perhaps an afterthought, as we shall see.

The portrait, properly titled Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Phelps Stokes,

is one of the very greatest, the extraordinary and deeply loved Gilded Age portraitist

John Singer Sargent ever painted.
