Our guest today is going to help us sort through Iowa, the rest of the primary, and the general election,

and just as importantly, the stakes of this election.

Secretary of State John Kerry, former United States Senator, presidential candidate,

a Democratic nominee in 2004, has a really unique perspective.

He was running in 2004 and was in third or fourth place in Iowa until very late and really captured a lot of momentum, largely driven by

electability so there's quite a bit of similarity between that race and now I

think Iowa's wide open and a lot of people concerned about electability so I

think he'll have a unique perspective on that.

What happens after Iowa?

The race gets much different.

You go from kind of almost running for governor of Iowa

to sprinting across the country and flying across the country so what's

that like and also you know his perspective on the general election he was

involved in a very close race against George W Bush so the last Democrat to run against an incumbent Republican

president, some of the lessons we can take from that race, and in particular I

think how Bush really was able to drive up turnout. John Kerry in Ohio most famously added over 600,000 votes

over Al Gore's number in 2000.

Everybody thought that would be enough, but it wasn't

because Bush was able to find and register and turn out conservatives kind of off the radar screen

and that's clearly part of the Trump playbook.

So I think he'll educate us about that and how dangerous it is to be defined before you can properly define yourself which is one of the

challenges he had back in 2004 and then I really want to talk to them about the stakes
