And you know, this is kind of a two-parter.

Yesterday, we did a story that was run in the San Francisco Chronicle entitled

How Ghost Students Are Applying to Colleges to Steal Financial Aid. We talked a lot. Francisco Chronicle entitled how ghost students are applying to colleges to steal financial aid.

We talked a lot that during the pandemic, people were stealing unemployment money, but what also

started and got bigger during the pandemic was stealing community college aid money by what they

call using ghost students. That is, they would probably collect the name and some identifying information of real people,

but stick them in there as prospective community college students,

and then apply for financial aid, which would get diverted to the fraudster.

It says here, although the state software has caught more than half of fraudulent admission applications in July,

it still left about 200,000 sham applications.

The Pell Grant is the most common. It's a federal college subsidy for needy students and fraudsters.
