He is a recognized authority on classical philosophy, especially Aristotle’s ethics. Pakaluk has held academic appointments at Clark University, Brown University, Ave Maria University, and The Catholic University of America, among others.

0:11.7	I want to begin by just raising some questions about the concept of development.
0:18.9	And it's a very strange notion.
0:22.9	Development seems to be a change.
0:25.8	So there are two different points in time or more,
0:28.2	and the thing is not quite the same as it was at the later point.
0:33.1	At the later point, it's not the same as it was at the earlier point.
0:36.5	And yet, if you study Aristotle and think of classical categories of change, it doesn't
0:42.9	fit into any of them.
0:44.9	So there's change in quantity, augmentation, diminution, development is not that, it's not just
0:50.7	growing in bulk.
0:52.6	There's change in quality. Well, development is not change in quality. There's change in quality.
0:55.1	Development is not change in quality.
0:56.9	There's change of place or relationship.
1:00.1	It's not that either.
1:01.7	It's obviously not generation or corruption.
1:04.3	It's not coming to existence or growing out of existence.
1:06.8	So what kind of change is it?
1:09.1	It really does raise all of these deep questions of sameness and difference, right?
1:14.6	Continuity across very dramatic changes in some cases.
1:19.6	So that's the first thing I want to do with you is just to puzzle with you about what development is.
