So when we get started here in just a couple seconds, we're starting at the beginning of chapter 10 of the gospel according to St. John.

And I'll do my usual that by the time people hear this on the internet, the first Bible study on the gospel of John, will have been posted for quite some time, actually, even though it's not posted yet as we're recording this.

So eventually you will be able to go back and listen to the first one to hear my introduction to the book as a whole, but I'll

real quickly get us caught up to where we were last time because even though this is the

beginning of a new chapter, there is not actually a break in the text here.

I know I've got over this before, but just read it.

We have to always keep in mind that the chapters and verses are fairly recent.

For most of the history of the biblical text, There were no chapter numbers.

There were no verse numbers.

The Old Testament was actually broken up into verses first, but that was not numbered

verses, that was verses for chanting.

That's where it was said into lines in order to be chanted.

But even then they weren't numbered.

And as we're going to see later on this evening,

when Jesus quotes the Old Testament scriptures,

he's not going to say,

look at Psalm.

Here's the number because that did not exist at this time.
