Summary

John Caputo is back on the podcast! If you are new to Homebrewed Christianity, you may not be familiar with Jack. Still, he is a longtime friend of the pod, a top-tier postmodern philosopher who radically returned to his theological roots. In his new book What to Believe? , he gives a beautiful introduction to his articulation of radical theology inspired by a Tillichian departure.  If you no longer “believe in God,” the Supreme Being of classical theology, or you never did in the first place, is there anything you still ought to believe, anything you should cherish unconditionally, no matter what? In this lively and accessible book, addressed to believers, “recovering” believers, disbelievers, nonbelievers, and “nones” alike―to anyone in search of what they really do believe―the acclaimed philosopher and theologian John D. Caputo seeks out what there is to believe, with or without religion. John David Caputo (born October 26, 1940) is an American philosopher who is the Thomas J. Watson Professor of Religion Emeritus at Syracuse University and the David R. Cook Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Villanova University. Caputo is a major figure associated with postmodern Christianity and continental philosophy of religion, as well as the founder of the theological movement known as weak theology. Much of Caputo's work focuses on hermeneutics, phenomenology, deconstruction and theology. theology? Well, one, it's short.

And you could finish it if you're new to it. It's readable. It condenses a lot of ideas that he's

explored in big, deep, intense works. And, and, look, he put out a new book, which gave me a

0:51.4

really good reason to get to hang out with him on the internet, which is just freaking awesome.

0:55.1

So if you enjoy this conversation, no.

0:57.7

He's probably been on the podcast 15 times or so.

1:00.7

Also, I helped him put together a website that has like entire classes he's taught on it.

So those links will be there.

They'll be on the post attached to this.

But if you are new to Caputo and are trying

1:12.2

to decide where to start, I used to tell everyone, go start with what would Jesus deconstruct?

1:18.2

Great text. And if you're very Jesus-e-Christocentric type, still a great place to start.

1:23.7

But if you're trying to get Caputo in his more recent text and like how he's engaged Paul Tillick and radical theology, what to believe, 12 brief lessons in radical theology is an excellent place to start.

1:35.8

I mean, it's amazing. You'll hear in this conversation where we dig into some other basic things around deconstruction and radical theology and religion, relationship, relationship, to culture, and that kind of thing.

1:46.0

And then we'll pick up some conversations we've been having for a long time, including

1:50.2

his radical theological version of Panentheism and how it both is enticing, alluring,

1:56.9

and make some process people uncomfortable.

1:59.4

Done, but we save that nerdy bit for the end.
