The 1970s was an amazing time to be born. McGarice, and this is post-mortem.

The 1970s was an amazing time to be born into the world of cinema.

For the first time, it became an academic subject in universities across the country, and many of the

nation's largest halls of learning

were opening flourishing film schools. It was a decade in which the muckety mucks of

the big studios lost control of their fiefdoms learned that they had no idea what to do in the post-Ezy

writer world when young audiences took control of what they wanted to see, and it wasn't

Dr. Doolittle or the standard studio pap of the era.

Movies were being taken over by the young Turks, as young as their audiences,

and they took risks, they mixed things up.

They were passionate and creative,

and in many senses the studios,

bewildered by what movie audiences wanted,

seated their power in many ways

to the filmmakers who were more closely connected to what ticket buyers were looking for in their entertainment.

The old guys in the gray hair and the coats and ties gave way to the new generation who wouldn't be caught dead in a suit.

The film schools offered up George Lucas, John Carpenter, Stephen Spielberg, and a ton of others.

A lot of what happened in the 70s was a flash in the pan before those in the seats of power
