All right, guys, we've got a special guest on the podcast today.

His name is Joe Rigney.

He is a fellow of theology at New St. Andrews College and an associate pastor at Christchurch.

And he's the author of a couple of books.

So one, we didn't get to today, but that's leadership and emotional sabotage. But he says the prequel to this is a book called The Sin of Empathy. And so that's what we're going to be talking about today. Perhaps you've heard him on some other programs. He did some stuff with Albert Mueller and some other places. But basically, we're talking about, again, provocative title, The Sin of Empathy, but he describes in detail the difference between empathy and sympathy, why we say sympathy and not compassion, even though we probably should say compassion.

And at what point we are sinning when we are being empathetic and where all these worldviews come from and kind of what they tethered to.

And so we do some work in terms of definitions and trying to

figure out exactly, hey, why is empathy reactive and why is sympathy responsive? And what's the

difference and why is sympathy that is responsive better? But also we talked about how people will

weaponize pity and how pity is being weaponized to kind of change and move things. And then we get into

talking about how if you kind of have and move things. And then we get into talking about how

if you kind of have this over emphasis on empathy, it leads to cowardice and indifference and also cruelty.

But then we talked about the progressive gaze, so G-A-Z-E, the progressive gaze, and kind of what

that does when you have church leaders, right, and we name some, that it's almost like they had, you know, a progressive sitting on their shoulder trying to judge them like, hey, are you being a good Christian? Are you being, uh, as me, a non-theist, uh, as an atheist as somebody that I think would be a good Christian, even though I don't read the Bible and I don't even know what any of this means and kind of how, you know, you have the useful idiots and the conscious nefarious actors leading to a whole bunch of bad outcomes for the church and how basically

how did these woke ideologies get into these churches get into these entire denominations

into these congregations kind of what what kind of issues happened that precluded that or preceded that

rather and then also you have

you know people talking about church heard and how there's legitimately people that have been

hurt by the church but then there's people that just have been told hey you can't do that and then
