the way he saw his father mistreated by the man, by the system, by the law, and yet was still able to use it

against them to save himself.

I just want to begin by exposing the folks to like who you are.

Like how did you even get to where you are being USC chaired legal professor?

Like where did you start?

Where are you from?

Well my brother, you know, it started when I was eight years old when the door on our house unceremoniously

parted company with its hinges and laid on the floor.

There was a no knock raid on my house

and my dad was a prostrate handcuffed

when I next saw him in our family room

uh... and then the next time after that i saw him

it was on visiting day family day in the Ohio State Penitentiary where he'd been sentenced to 22 to 55 years

for possession and sale of marijuana.

Again, I was eight years old when I lost in family separation is something that's been going on in America for a long time

not just at the borders it's a standard accompaniment of our criminal justice system

the next time I saw him standing upright outside a prison, I was 14 years old because he saw that his 22 to 55 years sentence could easily turn into life because he was one of them uppity Negroes.

So they were, you know, they weren't going to give him the lower end of the spectrum most likely.

So his only route out was to take books down from the Warden's
