Hey everybody. I just want to talk about a serious thing before the podcast starts.

The great American writer, director, John Singleton, died last week.

Dave and I were lucky enough to work with and get to know John pretty well over the past few years. But before that I knew him through his work.

Boys in the Hood changed me in the way the best art does.

I sought many days in a row.

I showed it to my kids the moment they were old enough to see it.

It's influence, the characters that John created,

Furious Styles, is one of the great American movie fathers.

And the movie showed that John at a very young age understood more about family, more about love, more about

race in America, more about that which is fair, that which is unfair, that which can be

changed, that which can't be changed about fate about how we are obligated to press on

despite fate than almost anybody and he was a hero before I knew him, and knowing him only reinforced it.

I never met a director who was more prepared when he came into direct billions.

His level of preparation, the amount of deep thought he put into it the quality of the

questions that he asked us his infectious a bullient manner all these things remained

incredibly inspiring to me, incredibly elevating to me.

I feel fortunate that I did tell him all this.

Not when he was sick, not when he was fucked up. I told him in life, so I feel like I put it out there.

He, we weren't close friends because we worked together for a short burst but we were working we but we were really in touch and
