having conversations with my wife, Samantha, the co-parent of my two

boys. We do it over in the Daily Stoic studio here in Bastrop, Texas. She and I talk about things

that we're working on as parents, things that we're working on as people, and how we are

supporting each other, challenging each other, and like I said, trying to get better at what we do.

Have you ever noticed the table we're sitting at? Well, we're sitting at a table that once belonged to one of my favorite writers,

the great Joan Didion, also hails from Sacramento. People see her as this great novelist,

this trendy fashion trendsetter lady, sort of the voice of a generation. But she's also a mom. And if you've read

her book, Year of Magical Thinking and the more tragic Blue Nights, these are both her wrestling

with what it means to be a public figure and a writer and then also a spouse and a mother. And to

fall short at that, the heartbreak of it, the joy of it, the lessons of it.

And so when I had Evelyn McDonnell on the podcast a couple months ago, I wanted to have her out because I loved her book on Joan Didion.
