You're listening to Sound Dependings and this week we're talking about former President Jimmy Carter and his relationship to rock and roll music.

I'm Jim D. Riggas and I'm Greg Kot. We'll also talk to Hanif Abderricki about his season of the Lost Notes podcast on the year 1980, but first a review of new music from the English duo, Everything But The Girl.

0:50.8

That is nothing left to lose the first single and the first track from the new Everything But The Girl album, Fuse. It is their first album since 1999, Jim, as you mentioned, a 24-year break for Tracy Thurston.

1:06.8

This group had been around for a number of decades before taking that lengthy hiatus. They formed in England in 1982. They made 10 albums between 1984 and 1999.

1:18.8

Started out with a sort of low-key acoustic sound, a sort of a sultry vibe influenced by bossa nova jazz, a sort of a loungey take on soul music.

1:28.8

I would say not that far removed from an artist like Char day. They definitely had a vibe that was similar. In 1994, those things changed. They broke through to a much bigger mainstream audience.

They started out with a sort of low-key acoustic sound, a sort of a sultry vibe influenced by bossa nova jazz, a sort of a loungey take on soul music. They definitely had a vibe that was similar.

1:51.8

In 1994, those things changed. They broke through to a much bigger mainstream audience. They had sort of been of a critics favorite prior to that.

2:00.8

But when they made the track missing, which got that Todd Terry remix, it turned into a massive club hit, suddenly they were getting airplay in these dance clubs.

2:10.8

Tracy Thorne also sang on a big 1994 hit for massive attack, protection. Immediately after protection, continuing to work with dance-oriented producers, how we be, deep dish, spring heel jack, of course.

2:24.8

They had Ben Wat was also doing a lot of production as well as Tracy. They always had their hands on that area. So they weren't completely handing things over to these dance DJs.

2:35.8

Well, in biographically, Greg, I will add that they are now 60 and still a couple. Been a couple through all of this.

2:41.8

Yes, and one of the reasons they took that big break is they started a family. They raised their kids. They did some side projects, some solo welpies. They both wrote memoirs.

2:50.8

And then this sort of slipped back into making everything but the girl music a couple years ago. They kept it very low-key.

2:57.8

And now for the first time in 24 years we have an everything but the girl album. Fuses the name and the track we're going to play is when you mess up from everything but the girl on sound opinions.

3:27.8

That was a little bit of when you mess up from the new album by everything but the girl fused.

3:44.8

Greg, I have always loved Tracy Thorns vocal. You were talking about some other touchstones there. I think a little Annie Lennox also as well as Sharday.

3:53.8

And then this troll cabaret delivery, you know, kiss me while the world decays, kiss me while the music plays.

4:01.8

I love that. I think that's my favorite lyric so far of 2023. It is interesting how this couple 260 year old musicians has never stopped moving forward.

4:13.8

And I wouldn't have expected them to come back, you know, almost a quarter of a century later, mired to their past.

4:21.8
