Jimmy Carter's the governor of Georgia in 1970, and he's actually coming at the end of his term.

And although he knows in his head that he'd like to seek the office of the presidency,

most people nationally do not.

That's why I want to talk about an occasion that wasn't significant at all in its time, but became significant later when you look at the history of 1970s politics.

And that's the Georgia Law Day speech. And it's at the University of Georgia in Athens. Actually, it became somewhat significant because Robert Kennedy spoke there.

And in 1974, when they have Law Day, Jimmy Carter is the governor.

So, of course, he's speaking.

And Ted Kennedy is there.

And Ted Kennedy is very much the guest of honor.

And there's two people at this speech where Carter ends up speaking that becomes significant.

Ted Kennedy's one of them. And Hunter Thompson, reporter from Rolling Stone, the Gunso journalist,

is the other. And the story of the Hunter Thompson's visit is kind of nuts because he's probably

down there more to cover Kennedy and cover his speech, because

Kennedy very much could be potential candidate for 76.

Probably not.
