This time, on those conspiracy guys, we cover what was the greatest single loss of US civilian

life until the attack of September 11th, an event equally damaging scarring the American

psyche, the Jones town massacre.

Led by charismatic and influential preacher Jim Jones, the People's Temple was a fringe

evangelical group with aspirations to become a discrimination free Marxist utopian community.

They aim to be the peaceful religious arm with the liberal communist movement of the 1950s

and 60s.

As the congregation grew through the philanthropic work of Jones and the People's Temple,

so grew their influence power and wealth, garnering support, protection and accolades from

politicians, press and celebrities as their church spread from Indiana to California.

But accusations began to surface of shocking physical and sexual abuse within the church,

of all two familiar techniques of fear and control.

And as public criticism intensified, the frequent need to attach leader Jim Jones descended

into manic paranoia and doomsday prophecies.

It is then under fear of investigation and with Jones' Christian rhetoric falling to

militant communist ideals that hundreds of temple members followed their father Jim Jones

deep into the jungles of northern Guyana.

There they had a commune away from critics and dissenters in which to enact their dreams

of a bureaucracy free life of peace and harmony.

I can't name for their beloved leader, Jones Town.

The things quickly deteriorated for Jones.
