| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to Bible Stories. We are your hosts, Matt Mullins. Hello! Hey Matt, my name is Todd |
| 0:27.5 | Hamons and we are two ministers slash buds who love telling the stories of the Bible and we cannot wait to share another one with you. In fact, today we will be covering Jesus, healing a woman. |
| 0:41.5 | That's right, Todd. We're going to be out of Luke chapter 8 today and it's going to be a little bit different. So this weekend I'm helping with a little conference thing, a little training thing that I get to do. |
| 0:56.5 | Some study of some conversations that Jesus had and this is one of them. So uncharacteristically, there are no notes on this desk. It's actually a stack of chairs that I have my computer on. No notes. |
| 1:11.5 | This is your typical desk though. I mean you've never actually received a desk. |
| 1:17.5 | That's in the 15th anniversary. I'm hoping for it. We'll get there. But this is more like a pickup game of basketball. So I write about it in books. So we're just going to kind of read and then we'll chat about it as we go. Is that okay? |
| 1:31.5 | Yes. |
| 1:33.5 | So we're Luke chapter 8. We're going to start in verse number 40 and it says this now when Jesus returned the crowd welcomed him for they were all waiting on him. So there's Jesus encounters this big group of people and seemingly they're there because he's been doing miracles and who doesn't want a miracle? |
| 1:51.5 | Todd, you want a miracle? |
| 1:53.5 | I want a miracle. You want a miracle? We all want miracles. |
| 1:58.5 | Verse 41 and there came a man named Jairus who was a ruler of the synagogue. So a ruler of the synagogue would have been someone who was a religious leader. He would have been somebody who plans the happenings within the synagogue. |
| 2:12.5 | So services and those sorts of things. He would have been responsible for the upkeep of the structure itself. This was an important person. |
| 2:24.5 | Todd, what impact if Jesus was to make a connection with Jairus just like from an outsider is from like a worldly perspective and what ways might that have benefited Jesus connecting well with a ruler of a synagogue? |
| 2:40.5 | Well, I mean, building that relationship and there could be some relational equity built there. |
| 2:50.5 | It's kind of a mindset of him coming in as part of what's happening in the synagogue. It's like he's agreeing in a sense with, you know, being on board with joining. It would be almost not completely, but like someone coming and becoming a member of a church. |
| 3:08.5 | So, hey, I want to connect with the pastor. I want to undergo the vision of the church and I want to agree with a lot of these things, but build a lot of relationships around that. Could that be a part of it? |
| 3:20.5 | Man, I really think that'd be helpful. Here's a portal to a lot more relationships, a even more legitimacy. Hey, here's a guy who's very publicly endorsed. This could be a great thing for Jesus in the disciples. |
| 3:35.5 | And here, seemingly, they could get very close to it because it says it introduces a sky and then verse 41 continues and it says, and following Jesus's feet, he meaning Jairus, the temple guy, he implored him Jesus to come to his Jairus' house. |
| 3:52.5 | For Jairus' only daughter, about 12 years old of age, she was dying. |
| 3:59.5 | So, this little girl, precious. Addie is an only child. She's my daughter. I would do anything for her. Here's Jairus who has humbled himself. He's like, he's thrown himself at Jesus' feet. |
| 4:13.5 | So, he is in front of this big crowd. He is saying through his actions, Jesus, I have a need. Jesus, I believe that you're the one who can help. |
| 4:24.5 | It goes on and says, as Jesus went, so Jesus has agreed this, so he's moving toward Jairus' house. As he went, the people pressed around him. I'm reading out of the English standard version. |
