Summary

Flashy stage productions, catchy viral soundbites, and attempts to stay relevant through pop culture are commonplace in many churches today. Though the methods were different in his day, Paul had to warn the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 about these same issues, reminding them that true faith is not built on spectacle, eloquence, or popularity, but on Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

in a lot of ways. And did you know the average pastor lasts only two years in the pulpit, as they say?

It's something that I don't really relate to. I love being a pastor. I'm so thrilled to do what I do and I enjoy teaching the Bible. It's icing on the cake. But I realize it's not one of those things a lot of young boys grow up saying, I would have a pastor. They may want to have firemen or a soldier or, you know, or something like that. When I was a kid, that's the kind of things we used to, I don't know if they do that as much anymore. But as a kid, pastor was not on a lot of your list of things to do. But I feel like it's one of the greatest jobs a guy can do to be a pastor. Now, it's funny because as soon as people find out you're a

pastor on the outside, it's always hilarious. You know, oh, you're a pastor. Praise the Lord.

1:35.3

They always say after swearing like a sailor 10 seconds earlier, it's like, oh, yeah, praise the Lord.

1:39.2

Then they always ask the Bible question and all that stuff. But Paul is talking about being a pastor, a preacher of the

gospel, and how he was a preacher. And we see the way he approached the Corinthian church. Now, before we

read this, the Corinthians, they were known to be an unruly church. Paul writes first and second

1:59.5

Corinthians. And he's really taken the church behind

2:03.0

the woodshed and giving him a whoopin. In fact, First Corinthians is tough, but second Corinthians is even

2:08.5

tougher. And Paul is saying, man, you're a messed up church. Well, Brett, that's not very nice.

2:13.1

Well, what kind of things was the Corinthian church involved with? Well, here's an example.
