Summary

The people of Capernaum are amazed at Jesus’ authority in preaching, in healing, and in commanding unclean spirits, or demons. There are two erroneous reactions to the topic of demons: the first is to deny they exist, and the second is to obsess over them. Instead, if we know our enemy and understand his schemes, he cannot easily outwit us. Our life is like a house; for Christians, Satan never owns the house, Jesus does, but Satan can influence and oppress. We must recognize the ways in which we could leave doors and windows to our house open (such as through unrepentant, habitual sin). Through repentance and faith in Jesus because of his death, burial, and resurrection, our allegiance to Satan is canceled, and our freedom in Christ is granted. God’s enemy becomes our enemy and Jesus’ authority becomes our authority.

and demons, if you've got a Bible, you can go there and find it. Here is Luke's gospel. We have

0:44.2

seen much of Jesus' early ministry in and around Nazareth. Last week, a little earlier in Luke 4,

0:52.0

we saw that Jesus was a prophet without honor in his own hometown. He was kicked out of Nazareth,

0:59.2

basically people tried to put him to death. And so this week, he relocates his ministry headquarters

1:06.0

to a town called Capernum. It's the hometown of Simon Peter. It's in the region of Galilee around

1:11.9

the Sea of Galilee, and much of Jesus' ministry is going to take place there all the way up until

1:18.0

Luke chapter 19. And at that point, he will set his face toward Jerusalem and the scene will shift.

1:25.1

So it's helpful to get an idea of the topography, the region around the Sea of Galilee and the small

1:33.2

towns therein, including Capernum, or around a great freshwater lake. There's a lot of fishing,

1:38.8

and then hills around it that are filled with farming. I'll give you a picture just to get an idea

1:44.5

of the Sea of Galilee. I don't know about you. I presumed wrongly that the Sea of Galilee was actually

1:49.6

quite small. This was a photo we took from a boat we were on this summer. It's an enormous

1:56.2

body of water, 13 miles by 8 miles, and the Sea of Galilee, as it is today, is actually smaller

2:03.7

likely than it was in the days of Jesus, has more people have moved into the area, and they've

2:08.4

needed more water. The water line has actually gone down. So think enormous freshwater lake

2:14.9

surrounded by fertile hill country and farming. And there we find this very important little town,

2:22.1

Capernum, dozens, hundreds of people. That's where we pick up the story in Luke chapter 4, verses 31
