Summary

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 200 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Hardcore die-hard listeners (aka Team 3W) will have heard the word ‘welcome’ WELL over 600 times so far at the start of the podcast so add those three from just now to the pile… A huge, incredibly appreciative and gracious thank you to all of you for tuning in, and being a part of the 11 million plus listens to the podcast so far! Anyway, without inhaling our own exhausts too much here, let’s get going - this one’s an amazing one, and truly a chat for this milestone episode - please welcome Jess Thom, performer, comedian and founder of Tourettes Hero!

Tourettes affects people in all kinds of different ways, but a key feature is the ‘tic’ - an involuntary sound made by the person, with the ‘motor tic’ being an involuntary movement. Jess has spent most of her life living with both, the condition developing in her teens to how it currently manifests itself. So as you will hear, Jess has her own unique tics - her main one is the word “biscuit”, but you’ll also hear “hedgehog”, “sausage” and a good few more. The sound accompanying them is her tapping her chest, just so you know what’s happening. What makes this a truly unique conversation is listening to Jess talk with Pip, who has a stutter. Not only that, we get to hear so much about Jess and her life, what moves her, how she got involved in the arts, and the world outside of her own condition. It’s a valuable insight into disability too, as she offers some wisdom regarding how she moves within society, seeing the world through different perspectives, and whether or not she would take a ‘magic pill’ to eliminate the condition. If that’s not enough, hear her enlightening talking points about relaxed theatre and what that is exactly, how she got involved and her own theatre performance in ‘Not I’ by Samuel Beckett (and how she got that off the ground in the first place), including a British Sign Language translation - tics and all! It’s also interesting to hear her say her thoughts are “tic-free” too - it can be easy to forget that part. Oh, and find out what a “buildup of biscuits” is too. You might be surprised. Enjoy this episode with Jess Thom!

there's been, you know, over 600

0:15.2

or, or, or welcomes, because there's also been some bonus episodes and from two

0:19.4

partners and stuff like that, but

0:21.8

it's a lot of welcomes and I mean every one of them, because you are truly, truly welcome.

0:27.5

Thank you for tuning in, guys. This week's guest is Jess Tom and as soon as I

0:33.7

confirmed her as a guest, I slotted it in as the 200th slot, because I think it's, I knew it would be a conversation

0:42.8

that deserves all the, all the fanfare and excitement that comes around with, you know, a big

0:49.1

a milestone anniversary. So it's a great chat and I think you're going to really enjoy it. Before

0:55.1

we get into it, obviously, man, it's been 200 episodes. That's mad. You look at the best.

1:04.4

When I started this, or still now, it's just me and my microphones and

1:11.0

knocking about the country, just going and chatting to people and it blows my mind that

1:16.2

we've got up to 200 episodes every week. You guys tune in over 12 million of you.

1:22.8

I've downloaded episodes. So yeah, thank you very much. I'm going to spend a little 5-10 minutes now

1:30.4

going over a few of the episodes. There's episodes that have had big names that most of you have

1:37.1

probably listened to. You probably all heard the Russell Brand one and the

1:42.1

Joe at Lee One is usually downloaded and the Simon Pegg one, but I'm going to go over a few that I think

1:47.6

might have been missed or overlooked. So that's okay. On episode number six, I had a guy called

1:52.2

Simon Singon and it was a fantastic one about science and maths and he bought an enigma machine

1:59.5

and showed me how that works. It was great. And on episode eight, I, Joe DeAnne Bickley, who's
