Summary

Bonnie D. Parkin, Relief Society general president from 2002-2007, wanted women to feel the love of the Lord daily. She taught that making and keeping covenants to serve God and His children helps us feel His love and find joy and peace. Join us as we discuss Parkin's life and teachings with Jenny Reeder, a women's history specialist in the Church History Department and co-editor of "At the Pulpit," a collection of discourses given by Latter-day Saint women from 1831-2016. Full Discourse https://www.churchhistorianspress.org/at-the-pulpit/part-4/chapter-49?lang=eng&highlight=love%7Cfeel%7Cdaily "Covenants—or binding promises between us and Heavenly Father—are essential for our eternal progression. Step by step, he tutors us to become like him by enlisting us in his work. At baptism we covenant to love him with all our hearts and love our sisters and brothers as ourselves. In the temple we further covenant to be obedient, selfless, faithful, honorable, charitable. We covenant to make sacrifices and consecrate all that we have. Forged through priesthood authority, our kept covenants bring blessings to fill our cups to overflowing. How often do you reflect that your covenants reach beyond mortality and connect you to the Divine? Making covenants is the expression of a willing heart; keeping covenants, the expression of a faithful heart." - Bonnie D. Parkin

I'm your host, Shailen Back. You may remember me from the first season of the Latter-day

Hi, I'm so happy to be here. Since this is the first episode of season two,

Carly and I would just like to introduce ourselves. Again, I'm Shailen back. My education

0:36.4

and career have been in communication. And before I left

0:38.9

full-time employment to spend more time with my three kids, two of which are very young twins,

0:43.5

I worked for the Mormon channel and on the church's social media marketing team. I served a mission

0:48.1

in Cleveland, Ohio, which included the Kirtland Historic Sites. So I feel like I'm a church historian

0:53.2

wannabe. And selfishly, I've

0:55.3

loved being part of this podcast because of what it's done for my own spirituality. I've always been

0:59.8

surrounded by strong women in my life, but learning more about the heritage of women in the church,

1:04.5

especially leaders, has been very empowering to me as I study more about the gospel and then

1:09.5

have the opportunity to teach it to others,

1:12.0

including my own children. And now let's meet Carly. Hi, my name is Carly Brand Geiman, and my

1:17.9

professional background is also in communications, journalism and communications, and I formerly worked

1:23.3

on the church's media relations team, where I helped reporters and journalists from all over the world better understand and more accurately report on the church's media relations team, where I helped reporters and journalists from all over

1:28.6

the world better understand and more accurately report on the church and its members around the

1:33.6

world. And one of my favorite parts of that job was to help people better understand the

1:39.0

contributions of women in the church and throughout our history. And I believe in women and in the contributions and the things that we have to offer in the church and throughout our history. And I believe in women and in the contributions

1:45.7

and the things that we have to offer in the church and in the world, our own homes and spheres.

1:50.2

So I'm particularly excited to be here on the podcast. As background, I served as a full-time missionary
