Summary

Today begins a 5-part series of conversations about moms in honor of Every Mother Counts. Jen G, as we call her in my house, is as special and wonderful as you think she is. She is such a ready learner that she carries around a pen and notebook everywhere she goes. She cares about all the right things and not one bit of the nonsense. She is still, in many essential ways, one of the “Garner girls” from West Virginia. Today’s conversation, co-hosted by Christy Turlington Burns, celebrates Jen’s mom, Pat (and a little bit, Jen’s dad, Billy Jack Garner, who died only 10 days before we recorded). I have loved knowing Jen since we met at The Nantucket Project many years ago and am grateful she could be with us for this series.

0:22.0	about their moms in honor of an organization that I have
0:25.6	recently fallen head over heels in love with called every mother counts I don't know if
0:29.5	you've heard of it it was started by Christie Turlington Burns 14 years ago. You know Christie because she's
0:35.0	been on like a thousand magazine covers with Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista. Anyway, she started this nonprofit to help make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all mothers everywhere.
0:50.0	And so she hosted this learning tour in Tanzania and I went and there were say, I don't know, 15
0:58.6	women on this thing and we went to hospitals and we listened to lectures by OBGYNs. We talked about policy and
1:06.2	systemic change with advocates and activists and we learned about birthing
1:12.0	centers and doula's and midwives and how this work gets done on the ground.
1:17.0	So Christie and her team and Every Mother counts have raised $42 million and put that to work in nine different countries
1:25.2	with on-the-ground organizations that are helping to make pregnancy and childbirth
1:30.0	safe and respectful and equitable for all women everywhere.
1:35.0	And I was struck by how well named the organization is,
1:41.0	the idea that every mother counts. and the way I was seeing it and thinking about it was
1:45.8	totally informed by my previous life working as a fundraiser for United Way which was my first
1:50.7	job out of college and I did it for a really long time.
1:53.4	I did it in Richmond, Virginia.
1:54.6	I did it in Baltimore, Maryland, and then out in San Francisco.
1:58.1	And the most effective thing I ever did as a fundraiser
