Hello, this is Dan Levitard. Welcome to South Beach sessions. The two of the people on this

0:10.8

podcast, Jamel Hill and Michael Smith had a bomb blow up in their face in American sports.

0:18.7

They hosted Sports Center six and there was an objection because ESPN had become liberal.

0:24.6

A moment that a bunch of minorities ended up on air, especially on the signature ESPN property.

0:30.4

And so that show went down in a heap, even though these are two people that I believe are excellent

0:36.2

at their jobs and would have found a more substantive voice if they've been given a little bit more

0:42.6

support around what it is that they were doing because these things take time regardless.

0:47.2

That is my opinion on what happened to Jamel and Michael. Here's theirs.

0:51.4

If you've been paying attention over the last 24 months or so about everything going on in this

1:00.0

country, you know that a bomb went off in the face of Jamel Hill and Michael Smith and after

1:07.7

they left ESPN, a similar bomb went off in the face of our show. And so I wanted to talk

1:14.8

to Jamel and Michael just about the last 24 months. I really liked the energy and the enthusiasm

1:22.0

that they applied to their job. I know I respect both of them as journalists long before they

1:27.8

ever got to ESPN. I just wanted to get them together to sort of not rehash because I think they're

1:33.9

both in a better place because of the healing and the freedom and the liberty. I dare say

1:40.6

that Jamel Hill, Michael made a hell of a career move in the middle of crying in John Skipper's

1:47.3

office as we've talked about here on South Beach sessions and really being at the center of the

1:53.5

very unpleasant storm. And I was curious as to how you experienced this differently because I've

1:59.6

talked to Jamel about this on South Beach sessions. And I've seen you in forms that I would say

2:06.6

over the years, your confidence was a bit broken and I was not used to seeing you not be confident

2:14.5

because you started in this game younger than just about anybody. You had success in this game

2:20.4

so early. You were in your early weren't you in your early 20s and already writing a column?
