My friends, I have a fable for you today.

It's actually one of my favorite Aesop's fables.

It's one of my very favorite because I think it's so relevant, it's so applicable,

and oh my gosh, if only we could teach this to everybody, starting with the young ones,

life could be a whole lot more enjoyable. Okay? It's called The Dog and the Shadow. A dog crossing a bridge over a stream with a piece of

flesh in his mouth saw his own shadow in the water and took it for that of another dog

with a piece of meat double his own in size. He therefore let go of his own and fiercely attack the other

dog to get his larger piece from him. He thus lost both, that which he grasped out in the

water because it was a shadow and his own because the stream swept it away.

Ooh, do you ever covet what somebody else has? To me, this fable is a simple one. It's about

the illusion of competition, perhaps even greed, and chasing what you

believe other people have that is, at least in your mind, more valuable or better than what you have.

And if you chase it, if you chase an illusion, you might lose what you

already have. How can this apply to your life? I mean, the obvious answer to me right off the

back here is in business. If I'm comparing my success to other people who do X more than me or sell

Y more than me or who are involved in projects that seem really, really impressive, it can make

me unsatisfied with my own steady growth, with the projects that I'm already working on,

with the work that I do that's meaningful to me. If I'm like, oh, that person's got a bigger

piece of meat, a better piece of meat, let me tussle that person and go for theirs, I'm rejecting

and forgetting about everything that I've created.
