Von Miller signed to the commanders late last night.

We were also hoping and praying that Terry McLaurin will sign an extension with the commander

sometime between now and training camp starting in about 10 days.

Joining us now on the phone, former Redskins head coach Jay Gruden,

0:23.1

kind enough to give us a few moments here. Coach, first and foremost, appreciate it. Hope you're

0:27.3

doing well. What are your thoughts on the Von Miller signing that happened late last night?

0:32.7

Well, you know, it's a good sign. A veteran guy who knows how to rush the pastor, you know,

0:36.6

he's not going to be much of a run-stopping guy in Coach Quinn's defense, but they do need some juice on third down and five plus, so he'll give them that added spark, so to say, you know, and, you know, one-year deal, there's no, you know, you're not tied to him for a long time, but, you know, It's good. You had a chance in OTAs to look at some of their young pass rushers, see what they had. They probably realize that, hey, we need a little spark. We need one more guy that can come in on third down and provide a spark, and whether he makes a team or not is yet to be seen. But he'd be a good addition for those situational-type games. What is the benefit of having a guy like Von Miller for some of the younger players, like a Javante Jean-Baptiste, on this roster? Well, he knows out a rush to passer. You know, a lot of it, you know, he was in his prime, was athletically. He's, like, really gifted. It's hard to teach that athleticism, that speed, that ability to bend. It's closing rate. I mean, it's hard to teach that, but he does have great hands, knows how to work against the tackle and his techniques. And, you know, if tackle oversets, he knows how to use his hands and get underneath them. If he short sets them, he can swipe them and get around them. So a lot of different techniques he can use, but his athletic ability is what made him

Bond Miller.

1:46.0

He doesn't quite have that full athletic ability anymore, but he's still an effective pass rusher.

1:50.6

And it can help the younger guys work out some things.

1:53.6

What have you noticed over the last couple of weeks, but specifically the last couple of days here

1:58.0

when it comes to the Terry McLaren contract extension debacle

2:02.2

that has seemingly taken place.

2:04.7

Yeah, you know, it's a tough situation for everybody involved, especially with Terry

2:08.2

and obviously Adam Peters and Coach Quinn stuck right in the middle of it.

2:11.7

You know, he probably wants to take Terry McLaren's side, but he can't really do that.

2:15.2

He's got to be on team Washington football, Washington commanders right now. So I think, you know, it's a helpless feeling. And we were similar with Trent Williams when, you know, he didn't want to come back. And obviously the Kirk Cousins debacle that we had there. So I kind of understand it. You say you want the players back in your building because you want to coach the best players, but you also have to, you know, leave it to Adam Peters, the GM, the president, the owner to get it done. And sometimes it doesn't get done. You got to move on and coach your guys you have. I know, I'm glad you mentioned the Trent and the Kirk situation that you had to deal with. How does that impact the way that you start your preparation, at least at this point in the season, not knowing whether a guy is going to be there or not? Well, Kirk was going to be there. That was no, he just, we couldn't get into an extension. Trent was different. Trent, you know, I kind of figured Trent wasn't going to be there, so we prepared, we signed Donald Penn and try to get some young guys ready, you know, having a 37-year-old Donald Penn instead of Trent Williams a little bit different dynamic. You have to kind of plan your past protection a little bit different. You got to chip. You got to do all kinds of different things that helped out the old man. Donald did a great job. He came in a bust of his tail, but he's no Trent, you know, not at that time. He was at one time. He was pretty good, but, uh, yeah, that was a

3:27.9

tough dynamic. And then obviously losing Jordan Reed to injury, you know, we had those

3:31.0

injuries before, too, so that's hard. You got to, you just got to try to do the best you can

3:34.6

and with the players that you have. And, you know, that's what Coach Quinn's going to do. Fortunately, they got a young rookie that can really run. They got Debo in there.
