in one way or another, fought, fairly or not, to build a social and economic structure

for America in the last quarter of the 19th century.

One of the names that is perhaps most often mentioned and one of the personalities most often discussed is that of Jay Gould.

Jay Gould was a name spoken of in the same breath with that of the Aster's and the Vanderbilt's,

and indeed, it was with Cornelius Vanderbilt that Gould tangled for control and dominance of America's rapidly growing railroad network.

Gould was known as ruthless, sharp, and devilish to the point of becoming known as the

Mephistophiles of Wall Street. His methods of relentlessly seeking profit remain much discussed

among historians and biographers today.

This very special episode is not an attempt to delve into the financial and business practices
