In his book, The Four Loves, CS Lewis describes friendship as such. Friendship is born at the moment.

When one man says to another, what? You too? I thought the no one but myself.

In my experience, the more specific the commonality, the more powerful, the connection.

Such was the case in the early 90s in Greenfield, Illinois. When Dan Haslotteon struck up a conversation with future bandmate and then current classmate Charlie Lowell on the basis of his

Toad the Wet Sprocket T-shirt. An alternative band whose influence would be evident and the music the men would soon make together.

Charlie and Dan along with Steve Mason and Matt Brown Lee, we formed their band Jars of Clay.

Almost incidentally. Their primary goal at the time was their deadlines for composition and recording classes at Greenfield College.

Their deadlines were met but it became clear that the final product was much more than academic.

When their musical pursuits became more professional, Matt left the band amicably to stay in school and sell down with his fiancee.

Essentially becoming the beat best of Jars of Clay to Matt Oad Marks' Ringo star.

In 1995, they released their first album together under essential records to much critical and commercial claim,

selling over three million copies worldwide. What was unexpected, however, was the mainstream acclaim.

Their single flood got serious play outside the CCM bubble on radio and MTV, peaking at number 37 on the Billboard Top 100.

Which led to further quote-unquote crossover opportunities. They toured with non-Christian artists such as Matchbox 20, Duncan Sheik and even STING!

As a result of their worldly appeal, much to the chagrin of the art-intly conservative wing of Christian rock fans.

And to this day, for better or worse, flood remains their only crossover hit.
