For many, the first 48 hours of this new year have been joyous, exciting.

For people in Japan, they've been bizarre and in some cases deadly.

The powerful earthquake in Japan, at least several people killed tens of thousands without electricity.

On New Year's Day, an earthquake rocked the western part of the country.

Its epicenter was on the Nodo Peninsula in the Sea of Japan.

It's largely a remote area, and the fact that it wasn't further offshore than lowered the chances
