In a major overhaul of its sex crime laws, the Japanese parliament voted unanimously for reforms that will redefine rape as non-consensual rather than forced sex,

and for the first time will criminalise voyeurism.

Campaigners welcomed this as a big step forward, but the response was distinctly chillier to another key piece of legislation that was also passed.

This was supposed to eliminate discrimination against gay and transgender people, but after being watered down, it's angered both gay rights advocates and ultra-conservatives.

And it still leaves Japan as the only wealthy G7 nation doesn't recognise same sex marriage.

Across one in Tokyo, Shima Khalil, told us more about these new laws starting with a new age of consent.

It is quite groundbreaking, and if you think about the fact that this is the first time the Japan changes or raises the age of sexual consent since it's been enacted in 1907,

and it now puts it with many other countries.

I think also what's groundbreaking here and what's quite remarkable about these changes is that they're specific.

The language here is very important.
