Summary

It’s Congress' first full week of 2025, and there is already a lot to do. The first item on the agenda is to certify the 2024 election results, exactly four years after pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol. This time around, the process is expected to be relatively simple. What isn't so simple are the remaining items on the agenda, particularly President-elect Donald Trump hopes for a single reconciliation package that is "big" and "powerful." Congress reporter Daniella Diaz joins Playbook co-author Eugene Daniels to walk through Congress’ to-do list.

Good morning, everyone. I am playbook co-author Eugene Daniels. It is Monday, January 6th. Welcome

back to school kids. Happy New Year. Hope you guys got a little bit of time off. Most of you didn't,

I'm aware. But here is what's driving the day.

0:21.4

Today at noon, the newly sworn in members of the House and Senate will meet on Capitol Hill for a joint session of Congress at which they'll certify the results of the 2024 election.

0:32.1

And unlike what happened four years ago, every indication is that things will go more or less like they're

0:38.4

supposed to. No riots, no Trump supporters. Storming the Capitol, no delays, and certifying the

0:44.6

electoral college count. Of course, a few things are different this time. There's a gigantic

0:50.8

fencing system up around the Capitol. An overnight snowstorm made it difficult

0:55.5

to get around the city, and no Democratic leaders are doing what many Republican leaders did

1:00.4

four years ago by publicly questioning the validity of the election results. Vice President

1:06.1

Kamala Harris will preside over the proceedings as vice president. She's president of the Senate. And in a video

1:13.1

out this morning, she vowed to fulfill her quote, sacred obligation and affirm Trump's

1:18.6

victory against her. You can follow all the action today at political.com. With Congress back

1:25.5

in session and Republicans now in control of both the House and the Senate,

1:30.3

there's a lot to watch for on Capitol Hill, especially as the GOPI is a trifecta in just two weeks' time.

1:36.7

Here to chat with me more about the big agenda items and what to watch these first few days with the new Congress is Danielle Deez.

Good morning, Daniela. Good morning, Eugene.

1:46.0

You reported over the weekend that President-elect Trump wants, quote, one big, beautiful reconciliation

1:51.8

package. That's somewhat in line with what Speaker Mike Johnson had planned, but a bit of a different

1:57.4

approach than what John Thune, who's the Senate Majority Leader over there, have been pushing for.

What's the thinking here and how are they going to get on one page?
