John 1: 35-42 - 'We have found the Messiah.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 608 (in 'The Lamb who takes away the sin of the world') - After agreeing to baptize him along with the sinners, John the Baptist looked at Jesus and pointed him out as the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” By doing so, he reveals that Jesus is at the same time the suffering Servant who silently allows himself to be led to the slaughter and who bears the sin of the multitudes, and also the Paschal Lamb, the symbol of Israel’s redemption at the first Passover. Christ’s whole life expresses his mission: “to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the daily gospel exegesis produced by Logical Bible study.

0:18.1

As always, what we want to do in each episode is to look at the literal sense

0:22.5

of the gospel reading from today's Mass. We want to give you the tools to understand what the

0:28.5

likely original meaning was when we consider what the author was trying to convey and how the

0:34.3

original audience would have likely received it. We want to go through verse by verse

0:37.8

to see if we can get closer to what that is. Now, with the Gospel of John, that's particularly

0:42.5

difficult because it's multi-layered, but we want to give you some tools to help you get closer

0:48.2

to that goal. And just a reminder that the logical Bible study ministry does produce other

0:52.9

podcasts and other exclusive verse-by-verse commentaries of other books of scripture. If you want to see the other

0:59.4

things the ministry is working on, you can check out the Patreon page for that. And the link for

1:04.4

that is in the show notes. I'd be very grateful for the financial support. So let's take a look at

1:09.5

today's reading, John chapter 1 verses 35 to 42.

1:14.1

As John stood with two of his disciples, Jesus passed, and John stared hard at him and said,

1:21.1

Look, there is the Lamb of God.

1:23.9

Hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus.

1:27.1

Jesus turned around, saw them following and said

1:30.5

what do you want they answered rabbi which means teacher where do you live come and see he replied

1:38.3

so they went and saw where he lived and stayed with him the rest of that day. It was about the 10th hour.

1:46.7

One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew,

1:52.2

the brother of Simon Peter. Early next morning Andrew met his brother and said to him,

1:58.1

we have found the Messiah, which means the Christ, and he took Simon to Jesus.

2:04.2

Jesus looked hard at him and said, you are Simon, son of John, you are to be called CFAS, meaning rock.
