Summary

January seems to have been going on forever, which has been dismal for many – but promising for travel agents. I’ve been talking to Ashley Quint, director of Hertfordshire agency Travel Time. There’s intense interest in exotic-but-safe Japan, though manage your expectations on the price.

Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder.

0:04.1

It's Friday the 31st of January, the end of the golden month, possibly, not for people around the UK.

0:11.8

It's been pretty miserable and it seems to have been going on forever, but for the travel industry.

0:16.7

One of the most interesting people in the travel industry is Ashley Quint, and he is the director

0:21.5

of Travel Time, a Hartfordshire travel agency. So, talk us through what January has been like

0:29.3

for you, whether people are booking in good numbers. Yeah, January is always holiday season. People

0:35.9

after Christmas are looking for something to look forward to

0:39.3

for the summer or beyond, sometimes a little bit nearer. But what we're finding is a lot of the

0:45.2

clients who we deal with want something more adventurous and something a little bit more exciting than just a

0:51.5

beach holiday. And so where are people going?

0:54.6

First of all, where are they asking you for?

0:56.3

And if they just say, Ashley, where should we go?

0:58.5

What's the answer?

0:59.6

We've had a lot of people recently who have asked for Japan.

1:03.7

Asia generally has been really interesting for the last couple of months.

1:09.0

Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, in particular. A lot of it

1:14.8

comes down to price, unfortunately, where people's expectations don't necessarily meet reality.

1:23.7

First of all, Japan, really interesting. I was talking to Stanford's Matt from Travel Guide Shop,

1:28.5

and they say that their top seller is the Loaning Planet Guide to Japan, and in sixth place,

1:34.2

the rough guide to Japan. So lots of interest there, I presume, because it's exotic but also

1:38.9

safe. It's an expensive place to get to. I'm looking at a thick end of £1,000 for airfares alone.

1:46.0

And when you get there, although it's cheaper than it used to be, not exactly a bargain destination.
