On this day in 1974, the body of Gerald Earl Kavanaugh was discovered on a beach in San Francisco.

He was the first victim of a serial killer called The Doodler.

Now let's go back to January 27, 1974, on the western shore of San Francisco.

It was unusually quiet on Ocean Beach after midnight, but it wasn't entirely deserted.

Just before 2 a.m., there were still a few people walking along the shores, enjoying the

peaceful sounds of waves crashing on the sand.

For one late-night walker, however, the peace was suddenly shattered by a gruesome discovery. Near the waterline, they saw what appeared to be a man,

lying completely flat on the ground.

Soon, they realized he wasn't sleeping.

He was dead.

The witness called the police and told them about the body.
