0:00.0	It's January the 27th, 1521. In the city of Verms, 244 miles southwest of Vittenberg, the most powerful
0:21.6	men in the Holy Roman Empire have gathered to discuss the teachings of Martin Luther.
0:30.0	Today is the opening ceremony of the Imperial Diet, an assembly called by Emperor Charles V
0:37.1	himself.
0:38.1	Effectively a civil magistrate, the Diet holds the fate of Martin Luther by a thread.
0:45.4	They are the last defense between Luther and the might of the Pope. The Emperor had withdrawn his initial invitation for Luther to appear at
1:00.7	Verms and the Pope had charged Luther's protector, Frederick, to bind his
1:05.9	renegade friar in chains and sent him to Rome for trial, or at least to banish him from
1:12.0	the protection of Saxony.
1:14.2	Frederick, deeply sympathetic to Luther, is in an agony of conscience.
1:20.5	He's here at Worms, standing with friends, asking them the question that has been troubling him for months.

1:32.0	He knew that if he obeyed the Pope and sent Luther to Rome for trial,
