Summary

It has arrived. Today at noon, Donald Trump will be sworn in for a second term as president — the culmination of a political comeback for the ages. But things will look different than we’ve come to expect from past inaugurations: Frigid temperatures have forced the ceremony inside the Capitol for the first time in 40 years. What comes next? A deluge of executive actions bursting out in every direction — from foreign policy to the economy to immigration to gender identity. Chief Playbook correspondent Eugene Daniels and Playbook managing editor and lead author Jack Blanchard walk through what to expect.

Good morning, everyone. It's Chief Playbook correspondent Eugene Daniels. It is Monday, January 20th,

0:11.7

and you already know what's driving the day. One thing, probably driving most of this week,

0:16.6

the inauguration of President Donald Trump and the end of Joe Biden's presidency. We'll start with one of the president and end the day with another. Joining me to preview what we're watching today is none other than Playbook's new managing editor at author, Jack Blanchard. Good morning, Jack. Hello, Eugene. I thought you were going to say I was driving the day. I can't believe there's something even more important. No, that was last week. That was last week. You drove it last week. The president has to take, has to take precedence. All right. Just this once. I'll let him tell. Just this was. This is your first inauguration of a president here in DC as like a DC writer person. How exciting. It's so exciting. I can't believe they've cancelled it and they've hidden it all inside and now I can't go and watch it.

It was because of you, Jack. They were like, you know what? Let's shut this down a little bit. Let's take it on inside. You brought all the bad weather from London, frankly. I was at the Politico brunch on Sunday afternoon. I was stood outside on this beautiful balcony up in that hotel that looks out. You can see

1:11.6

the White House and the monuments. And I was stood out like, and you know what? It's not actually

1:15.5

that cold. What's everyone could play with that? And then the snow came and now the freezing weather's

1:21.2

going on. Now it's real. You guys do weather properly over here. We do. We try to. We try to.

1:26.2

So as the outsider coming in who's been obsessed with American politics forever, what are you going to be watching out for? I mean, there's two aspects to it, right? There's this incredible pomp and ceremony around the whole affair, which is just for me, it's just as amazing spectacle. I've never seen it up close. Y'all do pomp and circumstance very good over there. We do, but it's not the same.

1:45.6

Things are a little different here. For example, our leaders don't release meme coins as like on the verge of the coming into power. I was used to not. This is new. Things are different here. So I'm looking forward to all of that. In terms of the stuff that actually embatters, though, right? There's two things that we're looking out for.

2:01.0

Number one, the inaugural address, the speech that Donald Trump makes, that's going to be super

2:05.9

interesting because it's going to give us an indication of, you know, is this presidency going

2:10.1

to be just like the last one, or is he going to try and strike a different tone?

2:13.4

And I'd love to hear your take on that.

2:15.6

The second thing, of course, is the executive actions they're going to follow.

2:19.2

How big a scope are they actually going to be?

2:21.2

How many are they going to be going to see?

2:22.7

There's lots of details sort of leaking out, but we don't really know for sure at this stage.

2:27.0

From what I've been told is the speech is going to be about strength, unity, and fairness.

2:34.4

That's what President Trump has also told folks that he's called by other reporters.

2:38.9

I think the interesting thing is those words also mean different things to different people.

2:42.7

Like, what does unity actually look like in one of these speeches?
