Hermann's father, Heinrich Guring, was a judge and the German general consul in Haiti.

Throughout Hermann's youth, the Gourings lived in a small castle near Nuremberg.

During this time period, the nations of Europe were industrializing their armed forces,

which influenced Hermann's budding interest in the military.

When he got older in 1912, he became an officer of the German Air Force.

In 1914, on the eve of the Great War, the 21-year-old Guring flew planes on the front lines.

He shot down over 22 Allied aircraft during the conflict, even taking over the Red Baron's squadron

after the Baron was shot down. Following Germany's defeat, Goring retired as a war hero. However,

he soon found he disliked the post-war atmosphere. He thought the country disrespected its veterans,

so he spent a few years working

abroad in the airline industry. In 1922, Goring returned to his homeland and attended a speech

by Adolf Hitler. Goring had the experience and clout Hitler needed for his fledgling Nazi party. So he entrusted
