Summary

Around Christmas, Texas Republican Rep. Roger Williams’ wife suffered a medical emergency. This week, as she underwent treatment, her husband was eager to be by her side.  Instead, he has been stuck in Washington taking failed vote after failed vote in Kevin McCarthy's quest to become speaker. “This is killing him,” one of Williams’ GOP lawmaker friends told us late Thursday night. “I’ve never seen Roger as down as he was yesterday.”  Williams isn’t alone. On Thursday, Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) felt ill; his colleagues had to convince him it was OK to duck out of the speakership drama and go home for rest. Rep.-elect Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) is eager to return to Texas after his wife gave birth this week. Rep. Kevin Hern's (R-Okla.) mother died this week; he wants to attend her funeral on Saturday. “There’s a lot more at stake than whether Kevin McCarthy’s going to be able to get the gavel,” the aforementioned GOP lawmaker told us. “We’ve got lives that are being impacted right now, and this is tough for people.” There’s been wall-to-wall coverage of the 20 anti-McCarthy rebels. But as the GOP leader faces down what will likely be his 12th failed bid for the gavel today, the story is about to shift to McCarthy’s increasingly tenuous support network.  Subscribe to the POLITICO Playbook newsletter Raghu Manavalan is the host and senior editor of POLITICO's Playbook Daily Briefing.Jenny Ament is the executive producer of POLITICO Audio.

Good morning, Playbookers. I'm Ragu Mwendovalin. It's Friday. Playbooks, Rachel Bade, is here with an update on the race for speaker. It's your Politico Playbook daily briefing.

0:15.4

All right, Rachel Bade, we're on to day four, vote number 12. Yesterday, we discussed a potential deal that, from what I can tell, didn't really yield any movement.

0:23.3

What did you hear about that?

0:24.4

What happened there?

0:25.3

So it sounds like it's still a work in progress.

0:27.6

I just got off the phone with somebody who's close to these talks, more than the McCarthy, on the McCarthy side of things.

0:35.3

And they're still hoping that they can land something early in the morning.

0:39.6

They're basically exchanging paper right now, so getting down to the nitty gritty.

0:44.0

But there have been some of these members who are already suggesting that this is not going to be enough.

0:51.5

I mean, we talked yesterday about how Chip Roy, who's leading these negotiations, was hopeful that he could bring along 10 members with him when he got to yes.

1:01.8

The person I just spoke with who's close to McCarthy was saying that if they get to 10, they'll be lucky.

1:08.7

So things are not looking great right now. They're still

1:11.2

working on this deal. The reality is, even if he gets 10, flips 10, and that sounds to be like a

1:18.0

best case scenario at this point, he still has a coalition that can block him from the speakership.

1:23.8

And so these negotiations are going to continue even after they land this agreement, if they land this agreement.

1:30.4

What should people be on the lookout for today that might be different from past days and past votes?

1:34.3

So what I'm starting to hear from members who are backing him right now publicly is that he's really got to show progress and that he's moving some of these detractors to his camp

1:46.4

or his column as soon as this vote comes to fruition, you know, hopefully this morning.

1:52.4

And I'm starting to hear a lot of frustration from these McCarthy supporters.

1:57.3

They're sort of sick of being in Washington.

1:59.5

They're sick of the drama.

2:02.2

And people are starting to say that, you know, look, if McCarthy can't do this, someone's going to need to confront
