In May of 2020, James Fairbanks was driving in Omaha, Nebraska looking for a new apartment.

He was 43 years old and had recently divorced his wife after 15 years of marriage, and the separation

had triggered a drinking problem as he tried to cope with the stress.

And he's dealing with this with COVID-19 as the backdrop.

So this is in the forefront as he's doing this apartment hunting.

So despite all of these circumstances, it seemed like Fairbanks was about to turn a corner

because he had found a potential apartment that would work out for him,

a place where he could get back on his feet and he could rebuild his life.

Now Fairbanks had two young sons that he was hoping would visit him while he lived there,

so finding his safe place was his first priority. And this is exactly why Fairbanks was checking out the

neighborhood in person and it was also why he did an online search for any crime

in the area and as it turned out the apartment came with a catch.
