Today is part 8 in our series on Captain James Cook.

Last time, we got Cook home from a second epic expedition.

The man was now seen as one of the world's greatest explorers.

Cook had gotten a cushy gig at the Greenwich Naval Hospital and went to work writing as a

count of the expedition. He was well off financially and he and his wife were not welcome

amongst the upper crust of British society. They went to balls and gallows and dinners,

rubbing elbows with lords and ladies and academics and politicians.

Now that was great, but it was said that Cook had come back from his last voyage fatigue

and worn down, which is understandable as he was now 47 years old.

During the expedition, he had had at least one extended illness. He was described as detached

from his crew, cantangress, and more obsessive about his mission.
