| 0:47.0 | which of course is the wing of the Democrats that took power in the 90s, |
| 0:51.0 | and famously includes former President Bill Clinton, among others. |
| 0:55.5 | And I'm talking to Lillie about how and why the new Democrats pushed policies |
| 1:01.0 | like free trade, micro lending, charter schools, and of course, welfare reform, |
| 1:05.0 | and how their particular brand of policymaking continues to shape the Democratic Party today. |
| 1:12.0 | So definitely stay tuned for that. For my segment, I'm going to be talking about weed. |
| 1:18.0 | Specifically, there have been a few new pushes to legalize weed at the federal level. |
| 1:23.0 | I should say, my state of New Mexico just legalized weed earlier this month. |
| 1:27.0 | And so all of that got me sort of thinking about how lots of states are now trying to roll out |
| 1:34.0 | these so-called cannabis social equity programs, which are programs that are theoretically |
| 1:40.0 | supposed to make sure that the same people who were harmed by past marijuana convictions |
| 1:46.0 | and the war on drugs are now in a position to open weed businesses |
| 1:51.0 | or otherwise benefit from the legal weed industry. |
| 1:55.0 | So obviously, I think that sounds like a nice idea, but I will be making some comments |
| 1:59.0 | in a little bit about why cannabis equity basically keeps falling short. |
| 2:04.0 | And before we get to all of that, I am very excited to be talking to an up-and-coming politician |
| 2:11.0 | who is running a very scrappy grassroots campaign in the state of Pennsylvania |
| 2:16.0 | with the backing of several labor unions. So let's dive in. |
