0:00.0 | Hey everyone, welcome back to the Jacobin Show. I'm Jen Pan, as always, here with Paul Prescott. Paul, what's new? |
0:27.0 | Not much. Glad to be back for another week. Glad to be here. |
0:31.0 | I think we have a great show this week. I mean, it's always a good time, but this week we've got Jane McElavi, who I know is one of your faves. |
0:40.0 | I definitely always love talking to her. And you know, I was thinking the last time we had her on the show, I believe it was literally a inauguration day. I think it was Biden's inauguration day. |
0:51.0 | Yeah. And I remember, you know, yeah, it seems so basically about a year ago, right? |
0:56.0 | Right. And I don't know. We, you know, none of us knew what was coming, but here we are about a year later. We've seen a lot happen in, I guess, the world of labor. |
1:07.0 | If you want to tell it that, obviously, there's been some, some bad, such as the failed union drive at, in Bessemer, Alabama, at the Amazon warehouse. |
1:17.0 | But we've also seen Striktober. So I'm definitely very excited to get Jane's thoughts on all of the above. |
1:25.0 | Yeah, for sure. I've been cured. Ever since Striktober started, I've been asking myself, what is Jane thinking about this? So I'm really excited to talk to her about that today. |
1:34.0 | Yeah. I also want to mention she has an end of year piece coming out. I, I forget which outlet it's going to be in, but I encourage all of you to go check that out when it, when it hits. I think that'll be early next year. |
1:46.0 | And I also want to shout out her post mortem of the Amazon union drive in Alabama. It's called blow out in Bessemer and it's, I like, I personally read it like multiple times, like I thought it was basically one of the best things that had been written after the failed union drive. |
2:03.0 | It's very clear-eyed. It takes a really hard look at what happened and it spares nobody. And I actually think that kind of thing is very useful. So I don't know, Paul, did you catch that one? |
2:14.0 | I did, yeah. And that's, you know, we'll definitely ask her tonight because some people may know, you know, they're, they're going to get another shot at it in Bessemer, the NLRB rule that it was on a fair election. |
2:25.0 | But, you know, I, people are excited, but it's like they got to think about what to do differently this time. So I'm really curious. |
2:31.0 | Here are thoughts on what she thinks how they should approach it this, this time around. |
2:35.0 | Right, right. |
2:36.0 | Okay. Well, I kind of feel like we should just dive into our segments today because we both have, I think some, some labor related issues to cover before we bring Jane on. And I want to give her, you know, ample time to share her thoughts. |
2:52.0 | So something that I want to talk about is Tyson foods. |
2:56.0 | Tyson, as you know, is this giant meatpacking corporation, they produce around 20% of the nation's chicken beef and pork. |
3:05.0 | And recently, they announced that they would be undertaking a racial audit at the behest of investors who were worried that the company might be perpetuating systemic racism. |
3:18.0 | So according to Bloomberg, Tyson is at least the third major US company to say this year that it will conduct an audit after racial justice protests across the US in 2020. |
3:28.0 | During the most recent proxy season, investors for the first time used shareholder resolutions to call for such racial audits leading Wall Street firms BlackRock and city group to agree. |
